ANTHRO 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Science Advances, Hominini, Inductive Reasoning
Document Summary
Hominin = everything from common ancestor of chimps and humans to humans. Approach = describe and order phenomena in a systematic way. Prediction based on general laws, existing human knowledge and intuition. Hypotheses are not proved in science, they can only be falsified. Science advances by disproof of inadequate hypotheses - promoting that most adequate proposition for the moment, realizing that new and better explanations will be formed later. Organic evolution = change in gene frequencies in a population over time. Microevolution = small-scale changes over just a few generations within a population. These changes are observable and measurable, thus organic evolution is a verifiable fact. Provides set of expectations for a population"s gene frequencies over time, with that population at genetic equilibrium. Postulates set of conditions where no evolution occurs. If deviations from these expectations are measured in a population, then evolution is occurring. Common sense and observable evidence of evolution.
