Document Summary

Standard american english versus: regional dialects and accents, black english. Bilingualism and mock spanish: people fear that spanish speakers will steal jobs and threaten the american way of life, if people don"t speak the same language, they may not think the same way- Cannot be trusted to paricipate in our poliical system because they"re diferent. May not hold the same values as us: pressure on spanish speakers to speak mix of spanish and english even in their spanish circles- sigmaized in the us. Feel the need to rid themselves of their accents: anglos have adopted some spanish words or make words sound spanish (i. e. el cheapo) Ofensive and plays on stereotypes to make english to make itself superior. Shouldn"t assume that someone is from a diferent country, just because they speak a foreign language; creates a form of solidarity. Anthropologists are not here to validate or disprove religion- Religious worlds are meaningful and powerful to those who live in them.
