Egocentrism = see the world primarily in terms of their perspectives. Centration = focus on individual, perceptually striking features of objects. Metacognition refers to knowledge of thinking about thinking. Operations = mental representations of dynamic and static aspects of the environment. Seriation = the ability to order objects in a logical progression. Matrix classification = classification using multiple dimensions. Characterized by the ability to think abstractly and reflectively beyond readily- available experience. Propositional logic = use of inferences based on related statements/premises. Scientific reasoning = formulate and test hypotheses systematically. Combinatorial reasoning = think about multiple possible combinations. Some think fewer than half of american high-schoolers can solve formal operations tasks. Complex verbal tasks may underestimate children"s competence. Discontinuous nature of change: we don"t work that way.
