America is losing trust with the government during the 1970s. Signs of economic and military decline (possibly because of defeat in vietnam) 10 yrs ago they were talking opportunistically about ending poverty. 1972, nixon won by a historical scale. Watergate hotel in washington d. c. , was the headquarters for the democratic. Nixon"s plumbers a group tasked with illegal surveillance, broke in to steal records. Burglars were arrested, and testified that nixon was complicit in their activities. Nixon tried to stonewall investigation, by encouraging his men to perjure themselves. Supreme court ruled u. s. v. nixon that the president could not withhold white. Nixon resigned after they were released, providing his involvement in illegal activities. Eroded faith in the government because nixon withheld the tapes from the people. But then he had to release the tapes, and from what it seemed like, it showed his racism. Established his questionable personality, some even wanted to impeach him, so he resigned.
