There is a correlation between news attention and news elaboration. People in the us have lower levels of political understanding than countries such as. Those who pay more attention to news tend to have more political knowledge. Conventional wisdom: increasing flow of information on a topic ensures widespread acquisition of knowledge. Stored information: if you already have little knowledge on a subject reading other articles about that subject will not increase what you get out of it. You will gain very little info from it. Educational tv: huge success amongst teens but did not close the gap. What people do with media rather than what does media do to people. Paradigm shift from content to audience: channel proliferation, recognition of the importance of individual difference. Individual differences and how they lead to different media choices/ individual differences lead to select content.
