Groups and targets behind divisive issue campaign on facebook. Scope: 87 million ads exposed to 17,000 consented participants across platforms 1,200 participants for four wave panels (primary elections) two prior to state elections (general election) september 8 to november 14. Cambridge analytical- took people"s information off of facebook without consent and used to for campaign manipulation. They did this by making shell groups which mimicked real activist groups. Through the exploitation of data (social media, credit card info) political advertisers figured out the extremists on either sides and targeted them, Only those who were targeted saw the ads so the ads were not necessarily public and thus those who were not targeted did not have access to the ads. The digital ads only appeared to targeted individuals. Her team developed a tool (which is like ad blocker) called escop. This tool was used to collect data independent of facebook. They did this because facebook refused to collaborate with them.
