PHILOS 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Nazi Germany
Document Summary
Socrates says that philosophers are nearly dead and constantly preparing for death (101-105) For one thing, the philosopher is not mastered by bodily appetites/pleasures. They do not value them and their virtuous actions don"t stem from them (106) Even if people practice temperance they do it for bodily reasons or fear of something. There are non-philosophers that don"t fear death but are still acting because of desires linked to the body. Shouldn"t completely not care about your body so to better devote yourself to study and seeking knowledge. Pleasures of mind will not bring same pleasure or pain. For another thing, the philosopher uses reason to get to the truth, not the body"s senses. Deceptiveness of the senses (shouldn"t use them as a guide to truth) Reason will tell us what"s real and true. Beauty, good, love, equality, twoness) comes from reasoning. Forms are different than the objects you sense.
