POLI SCI 170 Lecture 3: Lecture 3
Document Summary
Different kind of research designs and how to choose them. Tentative expectation about the relationship between 2 or more phenomena. Generate hypothesis about any observable implication: things you would observe if your theory is accurate, one theory should lead to many observable implications. Observable implication 2: your causal mechanism: e. g. observation consistent with your explanation for why you expect a certain relationship between your iv and dv. Research design= a strategy for how to test your hypothesis: a plan or collecting data, a plan for analyzing the data. It characterizes research questions as either qualitative or quantitative. We will think about different strategies for gathering and evaluating evidence. We will differentiate between: large-n (quant, small-n (qual) Large-n (quantitative: statistical analysis of dataset, survey research, experiments, etc. Small-n (qualitative: fieldwork, historical or contemporary case studies, interviews, etc. Quant and qual have different advantages: we"ll talk about this later in class.
