PSYC 3450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Unconditional Positive Regard
Document Summary
Why this theory came about - dominated by psychiatry - very analytic. Personal self-concept - characteristics establishing one"s uniqueness; how you define yourself. Social self-concept - how one perceives other see them; how we think others see us. Self-ideal - idealized imagine of what one most wants to be; what we aspire to be, but we know we can never reach. Often there is a discrepancy between personal self concept and each of the other two. Actualizing tendency: inborn drive to experience, grow, fulfill potential; we want to get close to our idea of self. Need for positive regard: need to be accepted, liked, and valued by others. Need for self regard: need for self concept to be positive. "you have to love yourself before others can love you" Need for self regard is at first dependent on positive regard from others.
