Projection: attribute unacceptable impulses to another a man is having an affair, accuses wife of cheating. Displacement: transfer impulses to more acceptable target can"t yell at boss, so i"ll yet at someone else. Defense mechanisms are not maladaptive unless overused good thing, but if it is overdone, it is not good. Stages allow of development of the psyche how/when ego shows up, etc. Each stage involves a conflict which must be adequately resolved. If stage isn"t resolved, fixation (being stuck at that stage) results. Each stage also involves a particular type of stimulation/activity utilized to channel id impulses. Anal stage (1-3yr) toilet training - ego development ego"s job to satisfy and mediate. Testing the limits to see what they can get away with. Ego is learning "what can we do to satisfy id, but get what is wanted"
