In 1848, theres a lot of nationalism but nothing happens. Like italy, the uni cation doesn"t happen from below with revolutions, but from above. In 1850s and 60s, prussia and austria con ict over numerous things. 1850s is a time of reaction, there is a crack down on revolutionaries/material advancement. Late 1850s - political movement is revived. Otto von bismark appointed prime minister in prussia. Prussia crown faces a crisis with austria over power over different states. Simultaneously prussia passes a military bill, lengthening time of service and most importantly, emphasizing the career of cials over the militia (the common people) So king appoints bismarck - liberals loathe him and conservatives don"t trust him. 8 years and 3 wars later, there is a uni ed germany. Comes about due to prussian success in getting territory not due to revolutionaries. 3 land disputes lead to uni cation: schleswig-holstein - part of denmark.
