MHS-3890 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Triune Brain, Limbic System, Brainstem
Document Summary
The basic brain: the reptilian brain is considered the primal brain; purely for survival purposes, limbic system / midbrain: often referred to as the mammalian rain, cerebellum/ cortex. Triune brain theory: lizard brain, brain stem, cerebellum, fight and flight, autopilot, mammal brain, limbic system, emotions, memories, habits, decisions, human brain. Iii: neocortex, language, abstract thought, imagination, consciousness, reason, rationalization, this is the order in which the brain also develops. The mammalian brain: characteristics, fo(cid:272)uses o(cid:374) (cid:862)(cid:271)ig pi(cid:272)ture(cid:863, can hold relationships, governing trust level, ca(cid:374)"t (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:374)e(cid:272)t (cid:272)o(cid:373)plex feeli(cid:374)gs. Midbrain is the region that is the focus place of trauma. Fight or flight response: when we think we are in danger, the hypothalamus begins a series of nerve cell firings and releases hormones like adrenaline into our blood stream. These patterns of nerve cell firing and chemical release cause our body to undergo a series of very dramatic changes.
