Flow diagrams were very useful for developing theories of attention. Sensory inputs sensory analysis meaning analysis memory & executive functions or motor behavior. Derived from visual search: first step is a feature search. Pre-attentive stage features are automatically extracted: color and shape is automatically extracted from the display, each feature is independent from each other. Focused attention stage: attention is needed to join the features to perceive/identify an object: early selection: occurs before meaning extraction. Despite large visual changes in the scene, we are essentially blind to them when we don"t attend to them. Continuity errors: type of change blindness that exists in film. Needed to have attended to the item that was there and notice when it changed. The object was there the entire time. Stroop effect, words are color words in different colors. Word meaning interferes with our ability to describe the color of the ink. The meaning of all information is analyzed before attention selects/filters.
