Pathophysiology: depletion of dopamine levels in the basal ganglia of the midbrain, which is where dopamine is produced and stored. Dopamine promotes smooth, purposeful movements of motor function. Dopamine depletion - impairment of the extrapyramidal tracts with loss of movement coordination.
