Psychoanalytic theory has had a large influence on western cultures and on thinking about social and personality development (not much research) Early social experiences in particular shape environment. Psychic energy (the id): biologically based, instinctual drives that energize behavior, thoughts, and feelings. The goal of the id is to achieve immediate gratification. Series of developmental states (oral, phallic) in which psychic energy (id) becomes focused in different erogenous zones. Most psychological problems originate in childhood relationships, especially relationships with parents. Fixation may occur if fundamental needs are not met during a stage. Biological drives with which the infant is born. Unconscious and operates with the goal of seeking pleasure. Tries to meet the needs of the id in ways that are socially acceptable. Based on the internalization of moral values, not social acceptance. Doing things because they matter to you.
