Women with lower income and poorer educational background. Sometimes as a response to economic troubles or unexpected pregnancies. Relationship quality tends to be lower than for married couple overall. However, cohabitors who plan to marry look very different from those with no definite plans. Selection: people who are more likely to cohabit are more likely to be at risk for unhappiness/dissolution. Half of cohabiting relationships end in marriage while the rest break up or continue cohabiting (over a 5-year period) Older data show that cohabiting first leads to a higher likelihood of divorce, but recent data shows that is not the case. 7% of all children live with cohabiting parents. Nearly 60% of children born to unmarried mothers are born into cohabiting unions. Children living in cohabiting households tend to have worse outcomes. But this s usually explained by their parents lower socioecono- mic status.
