Can look at structure through history and statistics. Can look at agency by living others" lives i. e. ethnography. Have to understand that people are controlled by society and selves. How free are people to make their own decisions: agency in total institutions . Found that even in institutions where everything is determined for you, individuals can still have agency but how they have agency is different: Patients would purposefully act out their disability to get out of certain activities: broken windows: space/place theory of crime. Residents (non-criminals) withdraw from neighborhood social life because of fear of crime. When neighbors withdraw, no one is watching and there is a greater opportunity for people to get away with crime. Residents" ability to come together to solve problems. Evidence of there being a crime is good predictor of crime. Disorder is the antithesis of pure community . Perceptions of disorder depend on context, not actual disorder.
