Document Summary

Evolutionary thought and natural selection: brief history of evolutionary thought. Timeline of ideas about the nature of life: 1800s: instantaneous creation: everything is just here. 1700s: linnaeus- we can figure out why things are based on how they look (grouping based on similar characteristics) 1809: lamarck- inheritance of acquired characteristics (animals will evolve within their lifetime to be better suited for their environments/ reach a goal then pass that onto their offspring) Uniformitarianism: current geological processes, occurring at the same rates and in the same manner observed today, account for all of earth"s geological features. Deep time: the earth is so old and things have been consistently happening for that whole time, evidence is within earth/ rocks. Voyage of the beagle: 1831-1836- developed ideas of natural selection. Finches had adapted based on the island they lived on. Individuals in a population differ from each other. These differences are heritable: passed from parent to offspring.
