Document Summary

The sun is the ultimate source of energy for most living things. Sun to photosynthesizing organisms, to other organisms in the form of food. Primary producer -> primary consumer (plant) -> secondary consumer (herbivore) -> Energy: the capacity to bring about movement against an opposing force. Forms of energy: potential energy: stored energy (bonds b/t atoms, batteries, positional, kinetic energy: energy of moving objects (light, heat, electricity) The laws of thermodynamics are the fundamental principles of energy: first law of thermodynamics. Energy is never created nor destroyed but is only transformed: second law of thermodynamics. Energy transfer will always result in a greater amount of disorder in the universe. Entropy: a measure of the amount if disorder in a system; the greater the entropy, the greater the disorder: heat. Some amount of energy will be lost to heat; a spillage. Local increases in order in themselves through their metabolic processes.
