BIOL 152 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Giardia Lamblia, Kasserine, Green Algae
Document Summary
Give evidence for the endosymbiotic origin of mitochondria. Structural, biochemical, and dna sequence data indicate that the first eukaryotes acquired mitochondria by engulfing an aerobic prokaryote. The early origin of mitochondria is supported by the fact that all eukaryotes studied so far have either mitochondria or modified versions of them. Give evidence for the endosymbiotic origin of chloroplasts. This plastid-bearing lineage gave rise to two lineages of photosynthetic protist, red and green algae. The dna of plastic genes in the algae closely resembles dna of cyanobacteria. Morphology & function of a flagellum & cillium. Extensions of the cell, bounded by the plasma membrane. Have microtubules that go the length of the cilium/flagellum. Allows for genetic variation due to the joining of two different individuals. Daughter offspring look exact and have the same genetic material as the parent. Population may go extinct with dramatic changes in enviornment.
