Document Summary

Exocrine have ducts, endocrine secrete directly into circulatory system. Endocrine system functions with the nervous system to maintain homeostasis (homeostasis=internal/environment balance, communication sent through impulse that requires a neurotransmitter) Hormones only affect target cells or target organs have receptors for a specific hormone. Hormone secretion is regulated by a feedback loop (effect of the presence of the hormone) There are two types of feedback loops: negative feedback loop (effect of the hormone inhibits further release of the hormone) Ex: eating, so production of insulin decreases: positive feedback loop (effect of the hormone stimulates release of more hormone) Ex: production of oxytocin triggered by hypothalamus (suckling of baby on nipple), causes maxillary glands to expel milk, production of oxytocin increased and continued. Hypothalamus = master control of endocrine system (interface between nervous system and endocrine system to maintain homeostasis) Secretes of oxytocin (ot) and antidiuretic hormone (adh) from posterior pituitary gland. Growth hormone (gh) also called somatotropin.
