Response (operant, behavior) consequence (reinforce, punishment) Theory of operant conditioning: behaviors that are reinforced (lead to satisfying consequences) will be strengthened, and behaviors that are punished (lead to unsatisfied) will be weakened, a response (operant) can have 3 consequence: Neutral (neither increase or decreases the response, nor chance it will reoccur) Reinforcement (strengthens the response, more likely to occur) Punishment (weakens the response, less likely to reoccur) Positive: a stimulus is presented; pleasing stimulus is presented (praise for good work) (generally the best) Negative: a stimulus is removed, unpleasing stimulus removed (scolding for doing poor work: punishment: Positive: an unpleasant stimulus is removed (aspirin for headache) Negative: a pleasing stimulus is removed (parents take away something from a child)
