PSYC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Circadian Clock, Sundial, Rapid Eye Movement Sleep
Document Summary
Social jet lag people have internal clocks that are out of sync with societal clock. Social clock video: our body clock, set by sun and dark of the shy, the sun clock, the rotations, our social (physical) clock. People with social jet lag has consequences: obesity, smoking, drinking, caffeine. Night owls" have delayed bedtimes/ wake times. Oversleeping on weekends to catch up on alarm-clock shortened sleep. The difference in the amount of social jet lag in an individual is the difference between midsleep on free days and midsleep on work days. What happens: light/dark most powerful zeitgeber, entrains circadian clock to 24 hours, regulated by the suphrachiasmatic nucleus (scn) Light/dark entertainment: phase angle of entrainment whether we are entrained to light cycle of dark cycle naturally, diurnal vs. nocturnal. Distribution of sleep and wakefulness across the 24 hr day: polyphasic vs. monophasic sleep, if you sleep for 8 hours. You have 4-5 sleep cycles throughout the night.
