Chapter 7 - The Family
Disequilibrium - unbalancing in family unit due to a change, until the family adjusts to the
change and goes back to equilibrium
-Can be BAD or GOOD (Child gets into a great college, parents are excited and happy
OR Dad loses job, everyone is upset and worried)
MIDLIFE
Parents into Midlife
-Job stability, satisfaction, and status peaks
-Adults feel RELAXED about workplace (no longer in the rat race)
-Earning power increases
-Marital problems decline, satisfaction increases
-Gender roles are more androgynous (many women take on more leadership
opportunities, many men are taking a stronger caregiving role. Basically, dads do not
engage with teenagers AS often, but MANY men feel much more comfortable as a
caregiver).
-MANY parents LOVE the Empty Nest (Parents: Yesss time alone is nice. Throwing a
party is nice. I don’t have to drive my teens places! I don’t have to babysit!) So,
adolescent autonomy can be welcomed and encouraged!
Children into Adolescents
-Increased desire for autonomy
-Exploration of identity
-Increased time with peers (less time with parents and siblings)
-Increased time alone
*VERY important for development, alone time allows teens to think and be alone
*it’s a nice relationship from these aspects: Parents get more freedom from the responsibilities
of parenthood, teenages get more freedom from the rule of their parents.
BUT: Blue collar job satisfaction decreases (dependent on physical strength and agility), and
1/4th of all divorces occur in midlife.
PARENTING STYLES
-Authoritarian, Authoritative, Disengaged, Indulgent
-Authoritarian: Low Responsiveness, High Demandingness
