PSYC 412 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Coronary Artery Disease, High-Density Lipoprotein, Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
Specific cardiovascular diseases: coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke. They have some of the same risk factors (metabolic syndrome): Low levels of hdl good cholesterol. Partly due to some creating risks for the other i. e. hypertension is risk factor for stroke. Aorta carries blood from left atrium to rest of body. Cardiovascular diseases: disorders of the heart and blood circulation system. Coronary heart disease (chd)/coronary artery disease: disease caused by narrowed or clogged coronary arteries; results from: Atherosclerosis (narrowing): the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on your artery walls (plaque), which can restrict blood flow. Arteriosclerosis (hardening): occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to the rest of your body (arteries) become thick and stiff sometimes restricting blood flow to your organs and tissues. Angina pectoris: extreme chest pain caused by restriction of the blood supply to the heart. Myocardial infarction (heart attack): usually clot blocks blood flow to heart.
