Document Summary

Women"s wages are consistently lower than wages of men, on average. Not only overall, but within the same profession. Overall, women are paid 79 cents for every a man makes. 55 cents for latina women, 60 cents for african american women. Occupations traditionally considered women"s work typically pay less than men"s work . The comparable worth of work for women and men is not equal based on level of education needed, level of responsibility, etc. Poverty, and government programs that support people in poverty, are typically thought of in terms of supporting women. About 85% of adult tanf recipients were women in fy2015. Some explanation for the feminization of poverty is explained by low wages. Low wage work means less benefits for retirement, and therefore lifelong income insecurity. Lilly ledbetter fair pay act (2009): amends civil rights act of 1964 to wide statute of limitations for filing discrimination to include last paycheck received, not first day of the job.
