Personal feelinpags that the word arouses in us. How humans create or construct meaning for their communication. Actors (us) engage in some sort of dramatic action. When we"re confronted with a message we don"t understand, we look to the hierarchy of meanings. We impose on the message a hierarchy of meanings. Level 5:autobiograpy- i"m a friendly person who enjoys fun. Level 6:cultural patterns- a norm in this group is to engage in playful insults. Ties of union are created by the mere exchange of words. The prevention of silence is an important function of speech. Goal: to reduce the fear and suspicion about the other person. When strangers meet, the primary concern is reducing the uncertainty that you hold toward the other person. Cognitive uncertainty- you hold it about the other person; want to discover who the other person is as a unique individual. Uncertainty is an aversive (unpleasant) state, generating cognitive stress.
