GEV 1050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Jet Stream, Occluded Front, Warm Front
Document Summary
Clicker low pressure system: contains air that rises and cools//high pressure system descending, dense air (adiabatic cooling) lefty-lucy-low goes counter clockwise. Clicker rain shadow effect: results from adiabatic cooling on rising air//windward side is wind side, think ca, (cid:449)i(cid:374)d off the o(cid:272)ea(cid:374) (cid:449)et. Border between two air masses (dramatic changes in weather occur here) Different pockets of air where they meet are fronts, often driven by high and low pressure systems. Warm front: rises up over cooler air, moisture condenses as the air rises to form clouds, clouds thicken and descend to a lower altitude, release moisture as precipitation, brings days of cloudy skies and drizzle. Cold front: stays near the ground, wedges under warmer air, produces thunderclouds, as it passes: high winds and thunderstorms, after it passes: cooler temps and clear skies. The air moving from a warm front (warm air) pushing cold air out of the way, opposite for the cold front (wall)
