Document Summary
Market before first birthday (so still lamb, not mutton) 120 lbs slaughter 7-10 mo. Disadvantages: market lambs in fall is more popular so prices drop. Heavier parasite load (kill lambs faster than anything else) More predator problems (everyone else is reproducing too, coyotes) Slaughter 4-6 mo 120 lbs (hit prime market for passover etc) Typically market lambs as feeders at 7-9 mo. Guard dog, shepherd w/ truck, gun, dog rambaille/ marino base , bring in some suffolk/meatier breeds. Fall or winter lambing for specialty markets. Typically more intensively managed than range flocks (control everything) Can mess around with diff lambing times b/c have facilities. Part time, probably have another job so leave sheep alone and check in everyday. Niche market in va and other eastern states. Sell high quality bucks to commercial producers. Generally not purebred; often mix of boer, spanish, sometimes ibex. B/c of smaller, younger industry, no commercial goat feedlots rn. Put ram near ewes (fence line contact)
