Feed tables report values for energy, protein, and mineral content. Quantify the energy value of a feed include total digestible nutrients, gross energy, digestible energy, metabolizable energy, net energy. Gross energy - burn feed sample to release and quantify the energy content. Digestion: breakdown of feed by mechanical, chemical, enzymatic action. Digestive tract = long tube through which food passes. Feed is broken down into smaller units --> either absorbed or passed out as gas/urine/feces. End products of digestion = amino acids, glucose/fructose, fatty acids, lipids, vitamins, minerals, water. Estimate of total protein in a feed. General sense of adequacy of diet indicator of nutritionally adequate diet is quantity and quality of amino acids. Nutrient composition tables present info on a dry matter basis. Knowing amount of moisture allows conversion of nutrient content from an as fed basis to a dry matter basis. As-fed to dry-matter basis, water will be removed and the percentage of nutrients will increase.
