Document Summary

Discovery of dna as the substance of inheritance in bacterial pneumonia. Two strains of pneumonia were observed in culture. An s strain which was virulent (produces disease) had a mucous capsule around it and an r-strain which lacked the capsule and was non-virulent. When dead s cells were injected along with living r cells, it was noticed that the disease was produced. Something was transferred from the dead cells to the living cells to initiate new patterns of activity. Discovered by hershey and chase: structure of dna -discovered by watson and crick through x-ray diffraction, elements of dna, nucleotides the basic monomeric unit of dna is the nucleotide (one sugar, one phosphate and one nitrogen base). The entire genetic code is based on the sequence of these four different nucleotides. Nucleotides are composed of: a pentose sugar (deoxyribose) 2) phosphate groups (one sugar and phosphate are linked together in an alternating fashion to form the backbone of the dna molecule.
