Document Summary

Question: how are different segments of dna which code for different proteins turned on: operon theory - explains the operation of the genes for the production of the enzyme which breaks down. A. structural gene - the dna sequences which code for messenger rna to produce a particular protein. B) operator gene- dna sequences which regulate the activity of the structural genes. 1)regulator gene- produces a repressor substance which binds to the operator gene and inhibits the transcription of mrna of the structural genes. 2)inducer- a substance which when combined withthe repressor and allows transcription of the mrna of the structural genes. Ii. control of genes in eucaryotes may also involve pre-transcriptional controls such as hormones, temperature, ph or other factors which may cause transcription of mrna. There may also be several post- transcriptional controls such as the production of pre-mrna which would be activated at some point to form mrna.
