Document Summary

As of the late 1920"s there was substantial evidence that: chromosomes contain genetic material, chromosomes were composed of dna and protein, protein was more chemically diverse than dna. 3 experiments were used to determine what component makes up the cell"s genetic information. Griffith: discovered transformation (transfer of genetic information between cells) Avery, macleod, and mccarty: transformation involves dna transfer between cells. Experiments used strains of s. pneumoniae in mice to test different hypothesis. The hershey-chase experiment demonstrated that dna is the genetic material. This experiment used phages on proteins and dna to see what was effected more to prove dna was the genetic material of a cell. Dna is a nucleic acid composed of nucleotides. Nucleotides consist of: 5-carbon sugar called deoxyribose, nitrogenous base (adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine, phosphate group (po4) attached to a 5 prime carbon of sugar. Also has: free hydroxyl group (-oh) attached at the 3 prime carbon of sugar.
