Produces epithelia and nervous tissue: as development continues, these germ layer develop into different cells and the 4 tissues characteristic of adults. Covers every surface of the vertebrae body and can come from any of the three germ layers. Susceptible to mutation because it is replaced quickly (cancer) Provides a barrier that impedes the passage of some substances out of the body: ex. Can facilitate the passage of substances into the body: digestive tract. Can be simple, single layer of cells or can my multiple layers of cells: called stratify. Cell can appear to be stacked on top of each other pseduostratification. All produce non cellular matrix that provides support, cushion, and transport. Loose connective tissue has a large proportion of ground substance with a loose scattering of ground fibers.
