Document Summary

Compounds: substances composed of 2 or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportion, composition is fixed. Never varies: components cannot be separated by physical means, properties of components are lost, molecular compounds (covalent compounds): composed of molecules of nonmetal elements, ex. H2o, co2, c6h12o6: molecules: smallest particles of a compound that has the properties of that compound. Molecules have electrically neutral groups of atoms bonded together through sharing of electrons. Ions: charged particles: there are no molecules in an ionic compound. What is it: this means that an atom with a neutral charge has 21 + 3 = 24 electrons, so look at the periodic table for the element that has 24 protons (an atomic number of 24). Chemical nomenclature: you will learn how to name 3 categories of compounds, molecular compounds: nonmetal/nonmetal. Ionic compounds: metal/nonmetal: acids: molecular compounds with h+ ions in water. Ionic charges of main group monoatomic ions (memorize these!
