Generally meant to be read aloud, this creates a triangular relationship, chaperoned information, important to recognize how much an adult is involved in the process. Symmetrical: words and pictures have the same message, common in concept books teaching reading, Complementary: words and images are interdependent and fill each other"s narrative gaps, one doesn"t make sense without the other. Contradictory: sense of irony, reinforce humor, establishing a tension between what a character knows or sees and what is presented to the reader.
