It is a process that begins at birth. We don"t just teach kids to read and write in kindergarten/1st grade. It should not be envisioned as something teachers must formally teach. Keys are exposure and opportunities to explore literacy, communication, and language. Types of behaviors that are demonstrative of emerging literacy. Inventive symbols (only have meaning to them) 1st letter child typically knows/acquires is the first letter of their name. Teachers can: share books with kids, model reading, talk about letters by names and sounds, establish a literacy-rich environment, reread favorite stories, engage kids in language games, promote literacy-related play activities, encourage children to experiment with writing. Show them how to hold a book, flip the pages, etc. Shows awareness that print in books tells the story. Retells stories from books with increasing accuracy. Pretends to read using pictures to tell story. Holds books right-side up; turns pages right to left. Makes some letters, prints name or initial.
