Second party system: little inter-party conflict, but intra-party conflict occurred. Spoil system: whigs emerge in 1836. Formed in response to andrew jackson: the republican party emerges to deal with the issue of slavery. Only time in which a 3rd party is created and becomes one of the major parties. Popular with business and was able to put abraham lincoln in office: their voter base was in the north, unlike today, party machines are created in this time. Progressives attack these machines as they are corrupt and slow down the government: consequence of progressive reform. Candidates have to rely on their own abilities. Move from party center to candidate centered. Parties are weakened but they are legitimized during this period. Fourth party system: the democrats adopt the policies of the populist party.
