Individuals have an incentive to force ride: strategic interaction = each actor is better off with cooperation, but each is incentivized not to cooperate ex. Survivor season 13, episode 10 reconstructing the building: group wants to act in common, but cannot agree on a solution, collective agreements can be undermined in the face of competition. August 25, 2016: principal agent problems, technically not a collective dilemma, one actor, the principal, contracts another actor, the agent, to act on his behalf, principal cannot be sure that the agent is acting faithfully ex. Institutions: help solve collective action problems, rules that determine how collective decisions are made, but have consequences for the outcome, can be endogenous or exogenous. Exogenous comes from predate members; not easily changed: political institutions. Rules and procedures: types of gov"t institutions, authoritarianism. Direct democracy (some tendencies used by the us)
