PSYC 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Flashbulb Memory, Donald Broadbent, Short-Term Memory
Document Summary
Learning gradual process except: imprinting, taste aversion, flashbulb memory. Imprinting- occurs almost instantaneously and will be life long. Ex: chinese food for me, my taste aversion. Memory- three process theory (introductory basis) (everything brain doing is memory) Sensory memory- transduction of --- into neural energy, Short term memory- requires a lot of energy, repetitive action potentials, a lot of atp, selective attention. Virtually unlimited limited to what your own responders can handle. Due to inhibitory fibers that info is eliminated, then on to next one. Sperling- first experiment presented visual information to folks briefly. Flashed letters for a little then had recall. Experiment 2 flashed an arrow after removing display, showed recall there. Children have to be in the dark longer to realize they are in the dark. **flashbulb memory- controversial, there is evidence to suggest some types of memory etches way into nervous systems b/c they are emotional. Occur in traumatic situations, flash backs ex world trade center.
