Document Summary
Where did russia come from: in the first millennium, a large group of tribes spread throughout eastern europe. They had no writing system but what know about them comes from accounts of literate scholars from rome and middle east, archeological evidence, and primary chronicles by monk. Those tribes were polytheistic and share the slavic language however they split into western, eastern, southern regions in the 7th century. After years of viking attacks from the north, regional tribes revolted and drove back the north men. They later turned on one another; afterwards they reached out to northerners to reestablish order. The viking sent rurik and his brothers to rule. They had a complex relationship with byzantine empire. In 987 a. d vladimir settled on orthodox christianity as the dominant religion in russia, he married byzantine princess then their relationship grew; byzantine missionaries created an alphabet for slavic language based on modified greek script.
