Document Summary

Genes that encode proteins with similar functions are grouped into clusters on the chromosome. A unit made up of linked genes that is thought to regulate other genes responsible for protein synthesis. Since genes are clustered they are transcribed together as a single mrna. This ensures that genes for proteins involved in the same process are all made at the same time. These are the sequences that rna polymerase binds too. These are the regulatory sequence that interact with regulatory proteins. Repressors can bind to the operator causing the transcription to not take place. By regulating a single promoter you can coordinate the expression of three genes. In the example above a,b, and c are structural genes they are referring too. A regulatory gene is what encodes proteins regulating expression of that operon. The lac operon consists of three structural genes, and a promoter, a terminator, regulator, and an operator.
