Sex is the biological characteristics at birth. Gender is the cultural definitions given to the physical differences. Male and female are given a set of characteristics that are labeled masculine and feminine. Ideas and attitude about gender are shaped by the culture we grow up in. 2 sex/gender is a social distinction not biological one. Code is a shorthand language that everyone understands and a set of rules/code of behavior. The bird cage clip: the way we walk becomes the way we communicate. You see codes in the culture mostly in advertising and other popular media. To see one of the deepest aspects of our identities we have to go outside ourselves to the messages around us, advertising.
