NAGPRA
- People who are descendants of person gets to decide how things should proceed
after found.
- Much more in time period of protection and conservation than in the past.
- Changing of the laws in the US and Washington State. WA state has stronger
laws than most.
- Ex: NAGPRA, Kennewick Man, Semiahmoo Spit, Graving Dock in Port Angeles,
Oak Harbor, etc.
- NAGPRA – Natie Aerica grae’s protectio ad repatriatio act—1990 this
law was passed. On federal land, or any project with federal funding if human
remains are found, specifies procedure
- In WA state have similar laws that relate to private property
- NAGPRA states that anything pre-Columbus is Native America. (Can produce a
problem.) (ex: Viking, travelers, slaves, etc.)
- Does allow tribal communities to claim the bones of their ancestors. Was not a
law in place before that.
- Law said that any museums, storage, universities that had human remains had
to catalog remains and had to return them if the tribe so desired.
