Document Summary

During gamete formation, segregating pairs of unit factors assort independently of each other. Found this out with dihybrid pea plant crossing: linkage. Genes on the same chromosome should segregate together, ending up in the same sex cell. Stronger in genes that are closer on a chromosome: crossing over/ recombination. Ways for genes on the same chromosome to assort independently. Physical exchange of material between chromosomes that originally came from different parents: mutations. An error that occurs during dna replication. Mendel didn"t understand but was aware of. Any change in dna sequence that becomes established in a daughter cell. Mutations in gametes can be passed down over generations. Regulatory or structural gene mutations more significant than mutations in non coding dna: point mutations. Single nucleotide base change in a gene. Several disease result from these point mutations: ex: sickle cell anemia point mutations. Ssd: autosomal recessive gene that has to do with hemoglobin.
