ANTH 350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sexual Selection, Convergent Evolution
Document Summary
Sexual selection and intro to cladistics: sexual selection. Differential reproductive success within a single sex of any one species. Females choose mates and males compete for female"s attention make selection due to natural variation in males. Certain traits may be result of sexual selection. Female struggle- pick the right mate to have healthy baby and have baby survive. Males- pass along genetics as much as they can. Want to impregnate as many females as possible to spread along genetics. Females don"t have this because have to deal with baby try to pick the best mate that they possibly can. Fact that females attracted to certain traits means these traits will be more successful. Things that females are more attractive to will have greater amounts of genes passed on. Used to think things like horns, antlers used to be for protection. Now think it is sexual selection: sexual selection can operated independently to natural selection.
