Document Summary

Tries to work out which traits are more evolutionary informative and important. Cladogram figure out which traits are derived, which are shared. Assumes parsimony --- assumes unlikely characteristic evolve then evolves again later. Look for thing that takes the least amount of steps. Species is actually a pretty complicated concept. Interbreeding populations reproductively isolated from other such populations . Not discreet categories most of the time. Important because speciation divides could determine endangered species. May breed in captivity, but do not breed in nature even when they overlap. Ex: lions and tigers: other species concepts. Evolutionary species concept- deals with the fossil record. Cant directly observe really long timeframe must be considered. Recognition species concept- something signaling between species that ids someone as like them as possible mate: reproductive isolation mechanisms. Prezygotic isolation- ecological, seasonal, ethnological, physiological, mechanical, gametic mortality. Postzygotic isolation- cytological, zygotic mortality, hybrid invariability, hybrid sterility, hybrid breakdown: formation of species.
