PSY 320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Beta Blocker, Circadian Rhythm, Neuroinflammation
Document Summary
More on stress + sleep: stress treatments. Treat anxiety or depression to treat the other (vicious cycle) Pharmacological treatments (not all clinically relevant at the moment) Anxiety: beta blockers, tranquilizers, crh (crf) blockers, gene manipulation. Depression antidepressants of various sorts, gene manipulation, bdnf, rtms, exercise, ect, crh (crf) blockers: things contributing to anxiety/depression stress/ hpa axis. Anhedonia/ opioid cholinergic/adrenergic balance: sleep deprivation- a stressor, sleep. Being awake disrupts homeostasis without sleep thrown off. Body temperature body is cold in the morning/when sleeping. Ex: cortisol levels shift over sleep periods. If you lock someone up with no external light source, body will still keep track of time, around 24 hour cycle. Suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus can detect light intensity from optic nerve. (the biological clock) Melatonin not required to go to sleep it just helps facilitate entering into sleep cycle.
