PSY 320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Cytoscape, Precision Medicine, Microrna
Document Summary
Cluster up or down regulation of proteins according to similar function, etc. Potentially thousands of proteins in a sample: epigenetics. Not that something happens and you lose a sequence these are the genes you have and how they are more or less turned on/off. Anything other than dna sequence that affects cell activity. Other examples include the influence of stress on expression of genes; epigenetic (cid:862)si(cid:373)ple e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple(cid:863) = totipote(cid:374)t (cid:272)ells differe(cid:374)tiate i(cid:374)to spe(cid:272)ifi(cid:272) (cid:272)ell t(cid:455)pes changes are heritable in some cases. Studies that are very well controlled show that there is a very high likelihood of this happening. Mechanisms include dna methylation and histone modification. Also microrna modulation of gene expressability and other mechanisms (more to be discovered, likely) Histone modification may allow dna to be more accessible to transcription: ge(cid:374)eti(cid:272) (cid:862)fi(cid:374)gerpri(cid:374)ts(cid:863) Whichever the technique, you end up with a snapshot of genetic material/ activity of an individual.
