PSY 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 38: Hydrocodone, Chemical Burn, Amygdala
Document Summary
Physical process of stimulating sense organs by features of outer world. Process of receiving information and not making sense of it. Psychological process of organizing and interpreting sensory experience. Psychophysics: how we make psychological meaning of physical stimuli. Ex: which is heavier 1 lb. of bricks or 1 lb. of feathers. Sensory adaption: process in which sensitivity diminishes when an object constantly stimulates one"s senses. Allows high sensitivity to change in one"s stimulations. Absolute threshold: lowest intensity level of stimulus detected half the time. Ex: if the lowest you hear the radio volume is 8, 50/100 times testing the volume then 8 is the absolute threshold just noticeable difference: the smallest amount of change between 2 stimuli detected half the time. Weber"s law: the amount of change in stimulus necessary to produce a just noticeable difference depends on the intensity stimulus first presented. Esp: purported ability to acquire information on the world without using any of the 5 senses.
